Daimler Trucks revolutionises truck production in Brazil

Project: New assembly line in existing truck production plant

Investor: Mercedes-Benz do Brasil (subsidiary of Daimler)

Location: Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil

FDI Center’s view: Daimler’s 125 million Euro investment into a new assembly line demonstrates the impact of Industry 4.0 and the latest production technologies on manufacturing. This includes the “hyperconnectivity” of various parts of the assembly process, the use of big data and mobile devices as well as the integration of 3D printing into the production operation. According to Daimler, employees will even use augmented reality headsets to perform maintenance work. The investment also reflects the recovery of the Brazilian economy and automotive market. The IMF has raised its forecast of GDP growth for Brazil to 2.3 percent for 2018 and sales of both light and heavy vehicles increased in 2017 after several years of decline.
