Nissan spins up new plant to give second life to EV batteries

Project: New plant for refurbishing electric vehicle batteries
Investor: 4R Energy Corporation (joint venture between Nissan Motor Co and Sumitomo Corp)
Location: Namie, Japan

FDI Center’s view: As sales of electric vehicles grow, several battery plant manufacturing plants are being announced or built around the world. This raises the question of what happens to the batteries after they reach the end of their useful life. There is likely to be strong demand for battery recycling facilities, given the high value of the materials contained in an EV battery. 4R Energy’s project represents a different model as the batteries are not recycled but refurbished to be resold. There may be potential for similar EV battery refurbishing plants in countries with large numbers of electric vehicles.
