Siemens invests in new 3D-printing facility in UK
Project: New 3-D printing facility
Investor: Materials Solutions Ltd. (Siemens’ 3D-printing subsidiary)
Location: Worcester, UK
FDI Center’s view: Siemens is investing Euro 30 million to create a new 3-D printing (or additive manufacturing) facility that will produce parts for the aerospace, automotive and power generation industries. The investment demonstrates the rapid development of 3-D printing from a niche technology to industrial application. Siemens has already produced 3-D printed parts such as turbine blades for its own products and is now taking the next step of offering its 3-D printing expertise to external customers. Siemens acquired a majority stake in UK company Materials Solutions Ltd. in 2016, and the most recent investment (which is expected to create 50 new jobs) clearly shows the rationale for investment promotion agencies to selectively support acquisitions by foreign companies as part of their investment attraction efforts.
