FDI Center has provided comprehensive training support to the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) since 2012. We have trained hundreds of professionals in Australia, Austrade’s overseas offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas as well as representatives of Australian state investment promotion agencies. In 2020, Austrade engaged FDI Center to design and deliver a standardized online training program tailored to the needs of its investment promotion teams and those of Australian state agencies.
The objective was to build practical skills and capabilities across teams and create a consistent, high-quality approach to investment attraction, supported by a structured learning framework.
FDI Center developed and delivered a comprehensive training program through a customized online learning platform. Over the course of the project, we:
- developed a comprehensive Investment Capability Framework defining the technical and enabling skills required for investment promotion professionals at all levels.
- designed a six-week digital training program combining learning exercises, videos, discussions, group work, case studies, webinars, and assessments.
- delivered ongoing support through daily feedback to participants via the online platform, guiding development and engaging with participants.
- updated and redesigned the full program in 2024 to reflect changes in Australia and the global investment environment.
Since it was first launched in 2020, the program has been delivered to hundreds of professionals across multiple cohorts and represents one of the most comprehensive training programs for investment promotion professionals globally.
Based on this work, Austrade has strengthened the capabilities of its investment teams and coordination between national and subnational investment promotion professionals. Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and demonstrates a clear contribution to improved investment attraction performance.
