What is the TGI in FDI initiative?

This initiative aims to provide practical knowledge and tools for IPAs to create opportunities for female leaders within their own organizations, while contributing to greater gender equality and societal benefits through the investment they attract.

It provides a global platform for economic development and FDI practitioners of all genders to share their experiences, learn from each other, and collaborate on gender-related issues and challenges in the FDI sector.

The initiative draws upon
UN SDG 5: Gender equality and women’s empowerment and promotes it in the context of economic development, FDI, and investment promotion.

Why we launched this initiative

From our own research, women are underrepresented in the field of FDI, even more so at leadership level. Therefore, to further progress towards gender equality within the realm of FDI, we launched this initiative to promote gender equality within EDOs, share best practices and give women and anyone interested in the topic a platform to speak.

We also believe that FDI has great potential to further gender equality within the host nation. By applying a gender lens onto investment, FDI can have a positive impact on gender equality through its operations. We want to bring this topic to the forefront of discussion and present the most effective ways of doing this.

The four components of the initiative

Gender equality through FDI

We emphasize how foreign direct investment (FDI) can advance gender equality by using a gender lens in investment projects. This means, for example, conducting a gender analysis to select investment opportunities that promote gender equity.

Gender equality within IPAs

We strive for gender balance and diversity in all aspects and departments of IPAs, especially in leadership roles. Therefore, we showcase and promote female leaders of organizations to increase their visibility.

TGEinFDIcommunity

We engage in various activities to share knowledge and best practices on how FDI can foster gender equality. These include a newsletter, an interview series, webinarsand a networking event.

Pledge Amongst IPAs to Advance Gender Equity in FDI

Together with UN ESCAP, we launched the “Pledge Amongst Investment Promotion Agencies, Economic Development Boards, and Ministries of Investment to Advance Gender Equity in Foreign Direct Investment” at the UN ESCAP headquarters in 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Pledge is a global commitment to integrate gender equitable measures into the work of FDI attraction-mandated organizations. The Pledge is open to all IPAs, EDOs, Ministries of Investment around the globe that have FDI-attraction mandates.
